Why Do Restoratives?

Modern life is full of numerous stressors. It is easy to spot the stress in dangerous situations, but what about the more complex stressors we face? These include job challenges, caring for family members, financial difficulties and much more. We can learn practices to help ourselves through these complex stressors.

In a restorative pose, you put yourself in “active rest”. Active rest is that time just before you fall asleep. You are aware, but you are completely relaxed. All your muscles and bones are comfortably supported, and you begin to slow your breathing. Focusing your breath helps quiet your “monkey mind”. Laying still and fully supported allows you to deeply relax, triggering your parasympathetic nervous system.

The PSNS plays a vital role in our physical and mental health. It calms the body after stress reactions by lowering the blood pressure, improving your digestion, and countering anxiety. Engaging the parasympathetic nervous system also boosts your immune system and helps the body heal.
