Yoga Props & Substitutions for Home Practice

Props are the tools that allow us to fully experience asana/poses.

Here are some must-have suggestions for at home plus substitutions and additional prop/tool suggestions to get the most out of your practice:

  • 1 Sticky Mat- look at the thickness of the mats and pick a thickness that suits your body and needs

  • 2 Dense foam blocks

Other prop/tool suggestions and substitutions:

  • Extra blankets or large beach towels

  • Hardback books taped together make a block and will work

  • A Yoga Bolster (rectangular are the best), or a firm sofa or chair cushion

  • Yoga Strap, or the belt from an old robe- should be at least 6 feet long

  • An eye pillow, a small scarf, wash rag, or a handkerchief to cover your eyes during savasana

  • Yoga sandbag or large bag of beans or rice ( 2-5 lbs.) wrapped in a pillowcase or towel

  • Small decorative pillows for your head or hands during savasana

  • 2 Therapy balls, or 2 new tennis balls and an old cotton sock
