Tips for Practicing on Your Own
A Special Place - Pick a place where you will not be interrupted
No Distractions - Choose a space where you feel relaxed and there are not any visual distractions. This helps you go inward and connect the body and mind
A Regular Time Each Day - Pick a time of day that suits you and your rhythm - commit to this time 2-4 times per week as this will benefit you and your mind and body
Get All Your Equipment - Have all items easily accessable - mat, blocks, bolster or pillows, and blankets - optional - an eye bag and sandbag.
Comfortable Clothing - You do not need special clothing, but choose to wear attire that you can move in easily and does not restrict you in any way.
Remove Your Shoes - It is best to practice in bare feet or with socks that have grip in the bottoms
Time Yourself - Put your phone on “do not disturb” mode, but set a timer for the amount of time you want to practice. 15-25 minutes minimum is recommended, but start with the amount of time you have until you get into a habit of a regular practice.
Allow Yourself to Go with What Feels Right for You - Begin your practice by standing in Tadasana or sitting on the floor or blanket for about 10 breaths. Just think about what Asanas your body wants to do, then begin your practice with the poses that feel right for that day.
When are you ready? After 4-8 Classes you are ready to start practicing on your own, outside of regular yoga class. You will find that you will begin to feel the effects on your body much more profoundly than if you just take one or two group classes per week. Never hesitate to ask your teacher for suggestions, as they will be happy to know you are going beyond group class with your practice.
